Colonial Whiskey at the mill
Oct 18th
2 p.m.
Burwell-Morgan Mill
$40 non-members / $30 members
Ticket price includes whiskey tasting
Two Revolutionaries were behind the creation of the Burwell Morgan Mill: Lieutenant Colonel Nathanial Burwell and General Daniel Morgan. Burwell was an enterprising planter-distiller deeply involved in commerce of the day, opening his own distillery in Frederick County and contributing to the growing whiskey trade. Morgan, on the other hand, was a true military man, who was sent to quell the Whiskey Rebellion in Pennsylvania sparked by post-war taxes shortly after the Revolution. Join us as we welcome Curator Clanci Jo Conover of the SPIRITS Museum as they discuss whiskey's impact on the lives of these revolutionaries, how it became America's favorite spirit, and learn just what happened during the Whiskey Rebellion. We will be sampling two of Eight Shires Colonial Distillery's recipes, crafted with heritage ingredients using the same methods as our colonial forefathers. There will be tastings of two different whiskeys: Charles River Shire, a single malt aged in charred barrels, and Warrosquyoake Shire, a straight bourbon made with heritage Indian Maize corn, Red Winter Wheat, and Malted Barley.

"Pale Horse, Pale Rider" Readalong Meeting
October 27th
The Clarke County Historical Association
FREE
This Halloween season, join our Curator, Dana Getka, for a read-along of Katherine Anne Porter’s, "Pale Horse, Pale Rider," the Spanish flu’s most (in)famous story.
This short, autobiographical novella follows young Miranda through the fever dream of wartime, flu-infested Denver as she falls in love with a soldier shortly to leave for France. By turns a doomed romance and a pandemic thriller, Pale Horse opens a chilling portal onto the devastating effects of the Spanish flu on both society and the human body, written by a woman who lived to tell the tale.
If you enjoyed CCHA’s Spanish flu exhibit, you’ll love this book. Find a copy of it at your local library, bookstore, or online at https://archive.org/details/palehorsepalerid00port. Then join us for coffee, tea, and discussion at the CCHA museum, on October 27, 2025, at 12 noon. Please feel free to bring your lunch!
